The class will take place in our shop just around the corner from Broadway Market. It's about 15 minutes walk from Bethnal Green tube station, 10 minutes from London Fields and Cambridge Heath overground stations.
CLASS OVERVIEW
In this six day course you will learn how to tailor your own bespoke jacket. Level up your sewing skills and learn the skills used by couture tailors. During the class you will draft and toile your own jacket, sampling a variety of couture stitches as you go! This course will take place over two three day teaching slots, this will give you the chance to spend time learning and perfecting your new skills. This advanced workshop will help you to take your sewing projects to the next level!
WHAT WILL THIS CLASS COVER?
+ How to draft a pattern from your own measurements
+ How to strike a pattern onto fabric using bespoke methods
+ How to canvass and make a fully canvassed forepart (the front of your jacket!)
+ Sewing patch pockets through canvas
+ How to use shoulder pads and sleeve head roll to properly structure sleeves
+ How to construct and attach collars using canvas and melton
+ How to fit and transfer changes on to your pattern
+ How to construct and sew vents
+ How to fit and transfer changes on to your pattern
+ How to line garments using traditional bespoke methods
+ How to hand finish garments including hand button holes
This is a practical class and you will create a bespoke pattern and finished toile of your jacket. There will be some tasks, including cutting lining and hand sewing, to complete at home in between the classes. We will go through all of the techniques for these during the class.
WHO IS THIS CLASS FOR?
This class is suitable for advanced sewists. This is a fast paced class, covering a range of techniques, so you may need to complete some hand sewing at home in the evenings of the course. You need to be confident in making alterations to patterns and setting in sleeves. You will finish the workshop with a range of advanced tailoring techniques that will level up your sewing skills!
CLASS INCLUDES:
+ Use of our Pfaff Ambition 635 sewing machines in the classes. If you'd like to learn on your own machine then please do bring it along - please let us know the model in advance and bring your manual with you.
+ All tools and equipment
+ Instructions to take home with you
+ Hands on help to create your pattern pieces
+ Drinks and sweet treats to keep you going throughout the class.
STUDENTS NEED TO BRING:
+ Fabric for toiling your jacket and matching thread for your jacket. We can advise you on what fabrics will work best and you'll be sent through a full list of requirements before the course starts. We have thread available to buy in the studio if you need some on the day.
TEACHER BIO:
Dive into the world of Couture and Bespoke Tailoring with Eleanor McDonald. Eleanor’s practice has always been grounded in tailoring, she produced seasonal collections that where shown in Paris and Milan before moving towards a Bespoke and made-to-order model. Trained at Central Saint Martins, she has worked on the BA Bespoke Tailoring course at London College of Fashion and is now joint Year 1 Lead on BA Womenswear, also at London College of Fashion.
WHERE?
The workshop will take place in our studio around the corner from Broadway Market. We have a dedicated workshop room at the back where you can sew in peace and still see the hustle and bustle of the shop. It's about 15 minutes walk from Bethnal Green tube station, 5 minutes from London Fields and Cambridge Heath Overground stations. The studio is at ground floor level with no steps. It is fully accessible and has a fully accessible toilet.
