Learn to Sew: Complete Beginners Course

Four week course of Tuesday evenings 6:30 - 9:30pm or Tuesday mornings 10am - 1pm. Various course dates available
6 Broadway Market Mews, London, E8 4TS

We'll be taking you through how to sew on a machine step by step. Starting at the very beginning, you'll learn to confidently thread your machine and understand its basic functions. You'll go on to practise different stitches and learn basic sewing techniques which will allow you to go on and sew independently at home. If you already feel comfortable using a sewing machine and would like to progress onto sewing your first garment we'd recommend coming along to one of our Introduction to Dressmaking Classes.

Week 1 - Learn how to use a machine and familiarise yourself with straight stitching, sewing corners, curves and using a seam allowance. You'll practise these skills on a simple headscarf project.
Week 2 - Improve confidence on the machine while working on a wash bag. Learn how to layout a simple paper pattern, transfer markings and cut. Do some basic quilting and learn how to insert a zip!
Week 3 - Start on a fully lined tote bag. Learn how to insert a welted zipper to the lining of the tote bag, how to insert a facing, how to bag out a lining, all while sewing a sturdy, useable tote bag. This project is designed to reinforce all of the skills you have learnt throughout the course and help you gain in confidence.
Week 4 - Finish tote bag.

+Fabric and matching thread for the wash bag (0.5m) and tote bag (1m) projects. Everything else (including zippers) will be provided. We can advise you on what fabrics will work best and you'll be sent through a full list of requirements before the course starts.

+ Use of our Pfaff Ambition 630 sewing machines in the classes. If you'd like to learn on your own machine then please do bring it along - please let us know the model in advance and bring your manual with you.
+ All tools and equipment
+ Drinks and sweet treats to keep you going throughout the class.

This class is suitable for complete beginners who would like to learn how to use a sewing machine from scratch. You will finish the class feeling comfortable and confident using a sewing machine with some completed projects.
