The workshop will take place in our workshop space just around the corner from Broadway Market. It's about 15 minutes walk from Bethnal Green tube station, 10 minutes from London Fields and Cambridge Heath Overground stations.  

CLASS OVERVIEW

In this workshop you will learn everything you need to create your own hand made patchwork quilt. You will be guided through the cutting and patchwork process and sew a small sample to get you comfortable with the techniques. Then, you will be shown how to prepare and baste a quilt ready for hand-stitching, before starting the hand quilting. We will be practising big stitch quilting using cotton sashiko thread and will discuss other kinds of hand and machine quilting. You will leave with a 30x40 inch quilt block finished and bound and all of the skills to tackle your next quilt at home!


WHAT WILL THIS COURSE COVER?


During this workshop you will work on a sample piece to learn the essential skills of patchwork and quilting. 

+ How to pick the right fabric for using patchwork 

+ How to cut and prepare fabric for patchwork

+ How to sew patchwork together for a neat finish

+ How to layer your quilt

+ How to hand quilt your pieces

+ How to bind your finished quilt


The se are practical classes and you will leave with a finished quilt sample!



WHO IS THIS CLASS FOR?

This class is suitable for confident beginners and intermediate sewists. You need to know how to use a sewing machine. 




CLASS INCLUDES:

+ Use of our PFAFF Ambition 635 sewing machines in the classes. If you'd like to learn on your own machine then please do bring it along - please let us know the model in advance and bring your manual with you.
+ All tools and equipment
+ White sashiko thread for hand quilting (if you'd like a different colour please bring it along!)
+ Drinks and sweet treats to keep you going throughout the class.






STUDENTS NEED TO BRING:

+ Fabric. You will need a variety of different fabrics for this project to create your patchwork from. We'd recommend scraps and smaller pieces of a few different fabrics, totalling 1x1.5m. Linens, cottons or other woven medium weight fabrics would be best. 

+ 35x45cm piece of fabric to back your patchwork

+ 35x45cm piece of wadding

+ Matching regular thread for piecing your fabric together. 



TEACHER BIO

Lauren MacDonald is a multidisciplinary designer, writer, and the founder of textiles studio, Working Cloth. Her approach and aesthetic have been tempered through academic studies in material culture and textile science, vocational experience in the fashion industry, and an ongoing obsession with materiality, form, and function. Her practice is focused on traditional textile handcrafts and spans interaction design, installation, sculpture and stitched form. Her first book In Pursuit of Color: From fungi to fossil fuels: uncovering the origins of the world's most famous dyes was released in February 2023 and her second book Piece by Piece: 20 Modern Patchwork and Quilting Projects to Make From Preloved Fabrics will be released May 2025. 




WHERE? 

The workshop will take place in our studio around the corner from Broadway Market. We have a dedicated workshop room at the back where you can sew in peace and still see the hustle and bustle of the shop. It's about 15 minutes walk from Bethnal Green tube station, 5 minutes from London Fields and Cambridge Heath Overground stations. The studio is at ground floor level with no steps. It is fully accessible and has a fully accessible toilet.
