CLASS OVERVIEW

What’s better than going to the gym in a fully me-made outfit? Learning to sew activewear may seem daunting, but in this one day course you will learn how to pick the right fabric for your activewear project, how to handle sports fabrics in the machine and overlocker and we will look at using a coverstitch machine for a professional finish. During this class we will make the Helen’s Closet Avery leggings, an every day staple with lots of hacking options so that you can fill your wardrobe with me-made activewear!

WHAT WILL THIS COURSE COVER?

+ How to measure your body and pick a size
+ How to pick the right fabric for activewear
+ How to handle activewear fabric to get a strong, neat finish
+ How to finish activewear, including using an overlocker and coverstitch machine
+ What a coverstitch machine is, and how you can use one to hem, join pieces of fabric and top stitch
+ How to fit with stretch fabrics
+ How to insert a crotch gusset
+ How to use elastic to stabilise your activewear
Please note, we have one cover stitch machine in the studio, which we will use to demonstrate, and all students will get a chance to practice on, but in the class, you will mainly use a sewing machine and overlocker so that you can replicate your leggings at home.
This is a practical class and you will leave with a gym ready leggings!

WHO IS THIS CLASS FOR?

This class is suitable for confident beginners and intermediate sewists. You need to know how to use a sewing machine and be comfortable using and threading an overlock, but it might be your first time sewing activewear!

This class will use the Avery leggings pattern, this includes a size range of 0/2 – 32/34 (up to a 62″ / 157 cm hip). If you fall outside of this size range, please get in touch with us.

If you have not used a sewing pattern before you will need to attend our Learn to Sew Clothes workshop and Overlocker Introductory Course first.

CLASS INCLUDES:

+ Use of our PFAFF Ambition 635 sewing machines in the classes. If you'd like to learn on your own machine then please do bring it along - please let us know the model in advance and bring your manual with you.
+ All tools and equipment
+ A copy of the Avery Leggings pattern
+ Drinks and sweet treats to keep you going throughout the class.

STUDENTS NEED TO BRING:

+ 1-1.4m of four-way stretch knits with at least 70% stretch horizontally and vertically. These fabrics will normally be called “performance jersey,” “activewear knits” or “technical fabric.” You can email the shop and we can help you pick the right fabric from our range. You can see all of our deadstock activewear fabrics here.
+ 1m of ½” or 1.3cm wide elastic.
+ Matching thread - we have thread available to buy in the studio if you need some on the day.

WHERE?

The workshop will take place in our studio around the corner from Broadway Market. We have a dedicated workshop room at the back where you can sew in peace and still see the hustle and bustle of the shop. It's about 15 minutes walk from Bethnal Green tube station, 5 minutes from London Fields and Cambridge Heath Overground stations. The studio is at ground floor level with no steps. It is fully accessible and has a fully accessible toilet.
