PROJECT
Join us to make your own statement banner! Alice Gabb is a banner making expert who hand makes bespoke banners from her studio in Hackney. Join her for a two day workshop where she will take you through banners of the past that inspire her own practice, and create your own statement piece. The finished banner will be approximately 50cm wide, by 70cm long.
You can see examples of banner’s on Alice’s Instagram, @alicegabb
WHAT WILL THIS COURSE COVER?
If you've got the hang of using your sewing machine (you can thread the needle and wind a bobbin), this course is for you!
You will learn:
+ An introduction to the influences within Alice's work, learning about the context of the cultural importance and significance of banners
+ How to construct your banner
+ How to layout and attach your lettering
+ How to add straps to hang your banner
+ Turning out and top stitching
+ How to hand sew fringing to your banner
WHO IS THIS CLASS FOR?
This class is suitable for anyone that can use a sewing machine!
CLASS INCLUDES:
+ Use of our PFAFF Ambition 635 sewing machines in the classes. If you'd like to learn on your own machine then please do bring it along+ All of the tools needed to make and finish your banner professionally
+ Sweet treats and drinks throughout both days
There will be a one hour lunch break during both days. You will need to leave the studio during this time to give the teacher a lunch break. We are 1 minute's walk from Broadway Market which is packed with amazing places to eat and a food market.
STUDENTS NEED TO BRING:
+ Fabric: You will need two pieces of fabric 80x60cm big (preferably not the same front and back). Banner fabric needs to have absolutely no stretch. Alice recommends:- upholstery weight velvet, preferably 100% cotton, which is dark/deep enough in colour to show your white lettering.+ Medium weight fabric for the back (curtain fabric or similar weight)
+ 80cm of fringing for the base of your banner. Alice uses bullion fringing between 6-9cm deep.
+ White thread
We can advise you on what fabrics will work best and you'll be sent through a full list of requirements before the course starts.
