DATE, TIME AND LOCATION

Saturday 6th July 2024, 10am - 5pm

32 Bocking Street, London, E8 3FP

The workshop will take place in our studio around the corner from Broadway Market. It's about 15 minutes walk from Bethnal Green tube station, 5 minutes from London Fields and Cambridge Heath Overground stations. It's a dedicated workshop space at the back of our fabric shop, nice and peaceful for sewing but you can still feel a part of the buzz of the shop. The space is fully accessible, at ground level with no steps. We also have a large accessible toilet.

CLASS OVERVIEW

Silk is the ultimate fabric for fancy garments and luxe essentials! Silk is lightweight and breathable, as well as having a range of luxury finishes. In this class you will learn all you need to know to feel confident using silk in your next make. Covering everything from how to cut silk, through to the perfect finishes, you will leave with all the knowledge you need to tackle your own projects. During the class, we will make a simple slip dress, so you can test out all of the tips and tricks.

WHAT WILL THE CLASS COVER

+ How to cut silk fabric

+ How to handle silk to ensure that your seams are smooth and neat

+ How to finish silk seams

+ How you can use special equipment (like specialist pins and rotary cutters) on silk fabrics

+ How to ensure darts in silk are smooth

+ How to sew a rolled hem

+ How to use bias binding to create adjustable straps

This is a practical class and you will leave with a beautiful silk slip dress!

CLASS INCLUDES:

+ Use of all tools including our PFAFF Ambition 365 sewing machines. If you'd like to learn on your own machine then please do bring it along - please let us know the model in advance and bring your manual with you.
+ All tools and equipment
+ A copy of the Saltwater Slip dress
+ Drinks and sweet treats to keep you going throughout the class.

STUDENTS WILL NEED TO BRING:

+ 1-3.3m of silk fabric. Your silk should be a light-mid weight with a good drape, we’d recommend a crepe de chine. The amount needed will depend on size and length of dress being made. You can see the fabric requirements for the Saltwater Slip Dress here. You can use a silk satin, but this will make it extra slippy and more difficult to sew, so we recommend a crepe de chine for the class.
+ A set of ⅜” rings and sliders for the dress strap.
+ 2-3m bias binding. The bias binding for the dress straps will need to be made in advance of the class, information on how to do this will be sent out ahead of the class. Alternatively, we will have regular bias binding available to buy on the day.
+ Matching thread
