Are you intimidated by the thought of sewing your own activewear, or that you need to own a special machine? Come and join activewear expert Melissa Fehr and make your own workout top and leggings in a single day using just a standard sewing machine. Learn how to select the best technical fabrics, adapt patterns for your chosen exercise, and troubleshoot issues that come up only when moving. You'll be using the Close Fitting Bottoms Block from "Sew Your Own Activewear" and the FehrTrade XYT Workout Top pattern (without the integral bra) which will be provided for the class.
STUDENTS WILL LEARN:
+ How to select, cut, and sew stretch fabrics
+ How to sew robust and stretchy seams
+ Finishing seams and edges
+ How to create a no-casing elastic waistband
+ Basic fit adjustments
+ Theory of adapting patterns for specific sports
+ A signed copy of Melissa Fehr's 'Sew Your Own Activewear' book (includes the Close Fitting Bottoms Block pattern)
+ A copy of the XYT Workout Top pattern
+ Use of all tools including our Pfaff Quilt Ambition 2.0 sewing machines. If you'd prefer to bring your own machine that is absolutely fine but if so you will need to also bring a walking foot that fits your machine.
+ Drinks and snacks throughout the day
STUDENTS WILL NEED TO BRING:
+ Leggings: 1m of 150cm wide activewear fabric: Spandex with four-way stretch. Needs to have 50% crosswise and lengthwise stretch and good recovery, usually contains a minimum 5% Spandex/lycra
+ Top: 0.7m of 150cm wide activewear fabric: Spandex with four-way stretch. Needs to have 50% crosswise and lengthwise stretch and good recovery, usually contains a minimum 5% Spandex/lycra
+ Leggings: 1m of 2cm wide elastic
+ Top: 3m of 1cm wide elastic
+ Polyester thread to match both fabrics
WHO IS THIS CLASS FOR?
This class is suitable for advanced beginners. You must be able to confidently use a sewing machine. You do not need experience sewing stretch fabrics.
Melissa Fehr began sewing and running shortly after moving from Pennsylvania to London in 2002. She began blogging at FehrTrade.com
in 2005 and in 2013 launched her pattern company of the same name, specialising in functional sewing patterns for activewear. To date she's released thirteen different patterns for men and women, as well as contributing to Threads, Love Sewing, Sew Now and Sewing World magazines as well as working behind the scenes on the Great British Sewing Bee TV show. Her debut book, “Sew Your Own Activewear”, was published in January 2018 on SewAndSo, a division of F&W International.
A keen distance runner, she’s also run seven full marathons in her own-sewn gear
and enjoys cycling and bouldering whenever she can. Having survived a bone marrow transplant in 2009, she has also won multiple gold medals for Great Britain in the World Transplant Games. She lives on a rusty Dutch barge on the river Thames with her husband James and cat Nishi and can usually be found in her sewing room, hidden behind a secret bookcase door.
